The present disclosure is related to a new use of pharmaceutical compositions comprising antagonistic drugs of the ion channel of the transient receptor potential vaniloid 4 (TRPV4) to treat macular edema in mammals, where said macular edema may or may not be related to diabetes. The Macular edema that is related to diabetes (diabetic macular edema (DME)) can be diffuse or ischemic; while macular edema that is not related to diabetes can be: macular degeneration associated with age; uveitis; obstruction in the small veins of the retina; postoperative period of cataract surgery; eye injuries; side effects of certain medications; and, some tumors in the eye. The compositions can be administered intravitreally alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents such as steroids or anti-VEGF.
