[Problem] To provide a method for producing an activated hepatocyte growth factor activator (HGFA) and a method for producing an activated hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) both without using animal serum. [Solution] The present invention relates to a method for producing an activated HGFA without using animal serum. The method is characterized by comprising the steps of: culturing a mammalian cell capable of expressing a non-activated hepatocyte growth factor activator (i.e., a pro-HGFA) in a serum-free culture medium to obtain a culture supernatant containing the pro-HGFA; and adjusting the pH value of the culture supernatant containing the pro-HGFA, which has been obtained in the aforementioned step, to a weakly acidic value to convert the pro-HGFA to an activated HGFA. The present invention also relates to a method for producing an activated HGF using a HGFA produced by the above-mentioned method.
