The method comprises estimating (Slot) a relative pose of each of a plurality of enrolled fingerprint feature data templates and of a verification fingerprint feature data template utilized to authenticate the user with respect to a reference coordinate system, aligning (S102), based on the estimated relative pose, each enrolled fingerprint feature data template with the pose of a verification fingerprint feature data template utilized to authenticate the user, ranking (S103) enrolled fingerprint feature data templates having fingerprint feature data overlapping with fingerprint feature data of the verification fingerprint feature data template in accordance with how well the overlapping fingerprint feature data of the enrolled fingerprint feature data templates match the fingerprint feature data of the verification fingerprint feature data template, and joining together (S104) the enrolled fingerprint feature data templates in order of ranking to create a mosaic fingerprint feature data template comprising the fingerprint feature data which overlaps with that of the verification fingerprint feature data template, against which the verification fingerprint feature data template can be matched to authenticate the user, wherein for any enrolled fingerprint feature data template fingerprint feature data which previously has been added to the mosaic template from a higher ranked enrolled fingerprint feature data template is discarded.
