A method of preparing a catalyst that is a tungsten carbide catalyst supported on mesoporous carbon: wherein mesoporous carbon is the support having high surface area and pore volume; the tungsten carbide catalyst disperses on the surface or in the channels of the carbon support; the metal component of W represents between 30 and 42% by weight; wherein in said preparation method, (i) the support is synthesized by nanomolding, according to which MC and CMK-3 are synthesized using commercial 10-silica sol or ordered SBA-15, respectively as a hard matrix; 1.0 hard matrix is impregnated with 1.0-2.1 g sucrose, 0.1-0.3 g concentrated H2SO4 and 5-8 ml H2O, and the resulting mixture is dried at 95-110 ° C for 6 hours and 160-170 ° C for 6 hours; the final solid is charred at 800-900 ° C in N2 for 3-6 hours: the hard matrix is separated using 5% by weight of HF or 2M NaOH solution at 60-80 ° C for 2-24 hours; after filtration, washing and drying at 80-120 ° C, the CM CMK-3 is obtained; and (ii) the catalyst is prepared by impregnating the MC or CMK-3 with a tungsten solution and, optionally, nickel salt (s); dried at 110-120 ° C and carburization in a flow of H2 for more than 1 hour; the catalyst without Ni is carburized at 850-900 ° C and the catalyst is carburized with Ni at 700-750 ° C.
