Context optimization for the coding of the position of the last significant coefficient

Method of coding transform coefficients for a transform block of a video block, the method comprising: obtaining (602) a binary string indicating the position of a last significant coefficient within the transform block of transform coefficients; determine (604) a context for a binary string binary index based on the size of the transform block; and encoding (606) the binary chain using adaptive binary arithmetic coding according to the context, CABAC, based at least in part on the given context; characterized in that the context assigned to the binary index of the binary chain is the same as the context assigned to at least one binary index of a binary chain indicating the position of the last significant coefficient within a transform block of a different size.
