Method and apparatus to identify transitions between sitting and standing postures

A method for identifying transitions between a standing posture and a sitting position by a user, the method comprising: - obtaining measures of the acceleration experienced by the user during the movement; - obtain a signal indicating the height of a part of the user during the movement; - process the acceleration measurements to identify candidate movements corresponding to transitions between a standing posture and a sitting posture, where the candidate movements are identified by matching the acceleration measurements with a predetermined acceleration profile for a seated transfer to standing, wherein the step of matching the acceleration measurements with a predetermined acceleration profile for a sitting-to-floor transfer comprises: filtering the acceleration measurements with a predetermined acceleration profile to produce a filtered forward signal; invert the filtered advance signal; and filtering the inverted signal with the predetermined acceleration profile; and - determining a candidate movement identified as a transition from a sitting posture to a standing posture where the identified candidate movement coincides with an increase in height in the signal indicating the height of the user's part during the movement and a Candidate movement identified as a transition from a standing posture to a sitting posture where the identified candidate movement coincides with a decrease in height in the signal indicating the height of the user's part during movement.
