A method of monitoring the combustion properties in an interior of a boiler of the type having walls comprising a plurality of parallel vapor tubes (12) separated by a metal membrane (14), the method comprising: a) the provision of first and second penetrations (16) in the metal membrane between adjacent tubes on opposite sides of the boiler without relocating the adjacent tubes; b) the projection of a light beam through an inclination optic comprising a tilt collimating lens (18) and a tilt relay lens (20) both located outside the interior of the boiler, the lens being inclination relay optically coupled to the first penetration (16) to project the beam inside the boiler; c) receiving the light beam with a capture optics that resides outside the interior of the boiler, the capture optics comprising a capture relay lens (20) optically coupled to the second penetration (16) and a lens (18). ) of capture collimation optically coupled to the capture relay lens; d) the determination of a force of the collimated received light beam; and e) aligning at least one of the tilt collimation lenses (18) and the capture collimation lens (18) to maximize the strength of the received collimated beam, wherein the tilt relay lens (20) is aligned such that a beam of light received by the tilt relay lens passes through the first penetration at the focal point of the tilt relay lens.
