DIAGNOSTICS OF MILD OR ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS BASED ON SALIVARY IL-1BETA AND MMP-9

Disclosed is an in vitro method for assessing whether a human patientsuffering from periodontitis has mild periodontitisor advanced periodontitis. The method is based on the insight to determine aselection of three biomarker proteins. Accordingly, in asample of saliva a patient suffering from periodontitis, the concentrationsare measured of the proteins Interleukin-1.beta. (IL-1.beta.), Matrixmetalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and at least one of the proteins: Interleukin-6(IL-6), and Matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3). Basedon the concentrations as measured, a value is determined reflecting the jointconcentrations for said proteins. This value is comparedwith a threshold value reflecting in the same manner the joint concentrationsassociated with advanced periodontitis. The comparisonallows assessing whether the testing value is indicative of the presence ofadvanced periodontitis or of mild periodontitis in said patient.Thereby, typically, a testing value reflecting a joint concentration below thejoint concentration reflected by the threshold value isindicative for mild periodontitis in said patient, and a testing valuereflecting a joint concentration at or above the joint concentrationreflected by the threshold value, is indicative for advanced periodontitis insaid patient.
