The present invention relates to an absorbent article such as diaper, pant diaper, panty liner, sanitary napkin or incontinence protection, the absorbent article comprising an absorbent layer and optionally an acquisition/distribution layer, wherein at least one layer selected from the acquisition/distribution layer, if present, and the absorbent layer comprises or consists of a monolithic absorbent structure made from one or more hydrogel-forming materials, wherein the monolithic absorbent structure is obtainable by photopolymerizing, layer by layer, one or more photopolymerizable compositions, and wherein one or more portions of this monolithic absorbent structure or the entire monolithic absorbent structure is configured to cause a change from a first shape to a second shape in response to body fluids. It also relates to a method of making the same.
