Described is a process of separating 2,5-diformylfuran from an aqueous mixture comprising dissolved 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural, dissolved 2,5-diformylfuran and a buffer substance, comprising the step of (a) cooling down the mixture so that 2,5-diformylfuran precipitates, wherein the aqueous mixture preferably additionally comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of oxidoreductase, horse radish peroxidase, and catalase. Also described is a corresponding process of biocatalytic oxidation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural to 2,5-diformylfuran, and a corresponding apparatus.
