[Problem] The purpose of the present invention is to discover a novel whitening ingredient and to provide a whitening agent and a skin-whitening external agent that contain such novel whitening ingredient. [Solution] As a result of conducting experiments, for the purpose of discovering a novel whitening ingredient, on a large number of compounds for which the whitening effect had never been examined, it has been found that rotungenic acid shows a high whitening effect. Hence, the inventors of the present invention provide a whitening agent and a skin-whitening external agent that contain rotungenic acid.
