A system and method for evaluating laparoscopic surgical techniques. The method includes: determining a signature of a cut performed using laparoscopic instruments; comparing the signature of the cut to a signature of a reference cut, wherein the signature of the cut and the signature of the reference cut are each represented by a one- dimensional function; determining at least one grading parameter based on the comparison of the signature of the cut and signature of the reference cut; and evaluating the accuracy of the cut based on at least one grading parameter.
