The present invention addresses the problem of providing a white LED element by which there is obtained white light having a brightness, color rendering property, and a color temperature that are suited to an illumination lamp while blue light is reduced, and also addresses the problem of providing a white LED unit in which a plurality of said white LED elements are arrayed and mounted on a wiring substrate. A red-light-emitting LED is provided to a white LED element obtained by combining a blue-light-emitting LED and a yellow phosphor, the blue-light-emitting LED and the red-light-emitting LED are connected to respectively separate power sources, and the ratio of the current supplied to the blue-light-emitting LED and the current supplied to the red-light-emitting LED is 1:0.3-0.6. It is thereby possible to provide a white LED element in which blue light is reduced and by which there is obtained white light having a brightness, color rendering property, and a color temperature that are suited to an illumination lamp. Furthermore, arraying and mounting a plurality of these white LED elements on a wiring substrate to obtain a white LED unit makes it possible to obtain a light source that is suited to an illumination lamp.
