A method and apparatus for generating a fault diagnosis information base (201) of a numerical control machine tool (10), for use in conveniently providing comprehensive fault diagnosis information. The method comprises: setting fault conditions (202) of a numerical control machine tool (10) (S201); in presence of each set fault condition (202), running a simulation model (207) of the numerical control machine tool (10) to generate a fault (203), and recording a fault phenomenon (204) of the fault (203) (S202); performing backtracking to generate a possible fault (203) causing each fault phenomenon (204), so as to establish a correlation between the fault phenomenon (204) and the possible fault (203) causing the fault phenomenon (204) (S203); and generating a fault diagnosis information base (201) of the numerical control machine tool (10) according to established correlations (S204). Because the simulation model (207) of the numerical control machine tool (10) is run, fault conditions (202) can be conveniently set. The fault diagnosis information base (201) established by using the method has the advantages of comprehensive coverage of fault situations and rich diagnostic information, and a result obtained when fault diagnosis is performed based on the fault diagnosis information base (201) is more accurate.
