The display apparatus includes a display panel (10) having a plurality of subpixels; and an array of a plurality of micro light modulators (M) on the display panel (10) and configured to adaptively modulate display contrast of the display apparatus. Each of the plurality of micro light modulators (M) is configured to adaptively modulate a light intensity of light emitted out of a light emitting side of the display panel in a region corresponding to each of the plurality of micro light modulators (M) based on a luminance level of a current image displayed in the region.
