The present invention addresses the problem of providing a side-chain type liquid crystalline polymer compound and a liquid crystalline composition, which are capable of forming a light-absorbing anisotropic film having a high degree of orientation, and also providing a light-absorbing anisotropic film, a laminate, and an image display device using the same. This liquid crystalline composition contains a side-chain type liquid crystalline polymer compound and a dichroic substance, the side-chain type liquid crystalline polymer compound being a copolymer having a repeating unit 1 and a repeating unit 2, wherein the repeating unit 1 has a mesogenic group and an electron-withdrawing group having a constant σ p value of Hammett's substituent, which is present at an end of the mesogenic group, of more than 0, and the repeating unit 2 has a mesogenic group and an electron-withdrawing group having a constant σ p value of Hammett's substituent, which is present at an end of the mesogenic group, of 0 or less.
