[Problem] To provide a vertical hydroponics system and vertical hydroponics method with which it is possible to prevent root rot in cultivated plants and efficiently cultivate plants while supplying a small quantity of nutrient solution. [Solution] A vertical hydroponics cultivation system comprising: a vertical hydroponics cylinder 101 provided in a standing condition on a floor or suspended from the ceiling of a house; a culture medium 102 housed so as to be able to be inserted into and withdrawn from the vertical hydroponics cylinder 101; and a nutrient solution-supplying means 104 for supplying a nutrient solution 107 from a nutrient solution storage tank 103 to the culture medium 102. The vertical hydroponics cylinder 101 is equipped with, in at least one direction thereof, a plurality of openings or one or more vertical slits 111 for planting seedlings or seeds of plants; the culture medium 102 comprises a water retention sheet 121 and breathable materials 122 and 123 sandwiching both surfaces of the water retention sheet 121; and a means for reliably collecting the nutrient solution 107 in the water-retention sheet 121, even if a nutrient solution supply device which causes a variation in the dripping position is used.
