The present invention provides an insulation material for a high-voltage direct current cable and a preparation method therefor. The insulation material comprises the following components in parts by mass: 98-100 parts of polyethylene resin, 0.15-0.25 part of antioxidant, 1.3-1.5 parts of crosslinking agent, and 0.5-0.8 part of assistant crosslinker. Compared with traditional XLPE insulation materials, the assistant crosslinker is added into the present insulation material; thus, the same cross-linking degree is maintained, at the same time the content of the crosslinking agent is reduced, the plasticization time is prolonged, the degasification time of the cable is shortened, and the concentration of a crosslinking byproduct is lowered, thereby improving the insulation performance of the cable.
