A riser tensioner system and method are provided. In the field of underwater petroleum production, heavy structures of oil wells and offshore platforms are used to extract petroleum from offshore. This large structure uses a riser tensioner system. The present invention provides an elastomeric bearing riser tensioner system that is corrosion resistant and does not require lubrication. The elastomeric bearings use a combination of an elastomeric material and a non-elastomeric polymer shim bonded between the bearing members, which can be attached to the riser tensioner.
