The steel treatment line includes an immersion pass stub roll. The dipping barrel is filled with a certain amount of molten metal. At least a portion of the stub roll is immersed in the molten metal. The stub roll includes two journals. Each journal is received by an opening defined by a roller or sleeves containing ceramic or refractory material. The roller sleeve is disposed between each journal and the bearing block. The inner dimensions of each roller sleeve and the outer dimensions of each journal define the clearance. The inner dimensions of each roller sleeve and the outer dimensions of each journal are configured such that the gap is maintained as a stub roll and the pair of roller sleeves are heated by the molten metal. Alternatively, the insert is fastened to the outer surface of each journal instead of the roller sleeve.
