The present invention relates to the separation of specific gravity used for separating an incompatible liquid dispersion (e.g., water, oil-water mixture) and emulsion for a two-phase (liquid-liquid) or three-To a system and method for performing process control, optimization and design of a processing system, and for evaluating performance. According to one aspect, the design, simulation, and control of such systems is based on the true geometric structure and multidimensional flow field, and on the rheology of the oil-in-water or water-in-oil dispersion, Is performed using computer fluid dynamics (CFD) software configured to determine separation efficiency. The results of the CFD simulation can be used to adjust the input parameters of the separator to maximize the separation efficiency of the separator so that the separator outputs a liquid stream containing a minimal amount of the incompatible liquid dispersion.
