Provided is a method of operating a reader of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system including at least one leader tag, at least one member tag and a reader. The method includes the steps of determining whether or not to respond to the reader on the basis of a communication result of a tag-to-tag (T2T) communication between a leader tag and a member tag corresponding to the leader tag, and performing tag-to-reader (T2R) communication with the leader tag. Therefore, a processing time and a frame size for the tag-reader communication can be reduced by having a reader device selectively communicate with a group leader tag.
