Method and apparatus for improved significance flag coding using simple local predictors

In modern video compression systems, the significance flags are coded using adaptive contexts to the last N significant flags coded in scanning order. One embodiment uses the last N significant flags in the scanning order as a predictor to determine which of a plurality of significance flag context sets to use to code subsequent significance flags. The second embodiment uses the last N significant flags in the scanning order as predictors to adjust the probability values associated with the significant flag contexts used to code significant flags for future coding.
