The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating prion disease, comprising the compound of (E)-methyl 2-chloro-5-(5-(2-(5-nitro-2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-4-yl)vinyl)furan-2-yl)benzoate or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The compound inhibits aggregate formation of prion proteins in a concentration-dependent manner, has no cytotoxicity, and suppresses the expression of transformed prions in cells expressing transformed prions, and thus may be beneficially used as the active ingredient of a composition for preventing or treating prion disease.
