There is disclosed a platinum ion chelating dipyridoxyl compound according to formula I, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, for the prophylaxis or therapy of a peripheral neuropathy induced by a chemotherapeutic drug in a patient, wherein the dipyridyloxy compound Is coordinated with a non-coordinated or non-transition metal metal ion, wherein the chemotherapeutic drug comprises a platinum ion. An example of such a chemotherapeutic drug is oxaliplatin. The problems of the prior metal complex compounds containing manganese ions are eliminated. With accumulated manganese neurotoxicity, more frequent use of the drug is possible because the problems in the prior art are eliminated. The compounds may be administered both chemically and temporally and spatially separately.
