The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a liquid composition of etherified melamine formaldehyde resins (ie, melamine formaldehyde resins etherified with primary C ₁ -C ₆ -alkanols) having a low formaldehyde content. The present invention also relates to a liquid composition of etherified melamine formaldehyde resin having a free formaldehyde content of less than 0.3% by weight. Liquid compositions of etherified melamine formaldehyde resins are useful as crosslinking agents in coating compositions.
