The semiconductor nanocrystals may have a photoluminescence quantum yield of at least 90%, at least 95%, or at least 98%. The nanocrystals can be prepared by continuously contacting the nanocrystal core with a substoichiometric M-containing compound and X donor with respect to forming at least one monolayer thereon.
