The method for sterilizing legionella bacteria in a hot water storage tank includes the steps of comparing hot water setting temperature (Tset1) of a hot water storage tank with sterilization setting temperature (Tset2), setting the current hot water setting temperature (Tset1) of a hot water storage tank or the sterilization setting temperature (Tset2), operating a circulation pump, igniting a burner, performing calorie control, supplying water heated in a heat exchanger to the hot water storage tank, and returning the water to the heat exchanger to heat the water to sterilize legionella bacteria when a user presses a sterilization button, in a temperature condition of hot water in a hot water storage tank that legionella bacteria start to inhabit.
