The present invention provides monomolecular metal complexes having increased activity in the copolymerization of carbon dioxide and epoxide. Also, a method of using such a metal complex in the synthesis of a polymer is provided. According to one aspect, the present invention provides a metal complex comprising an activated species having a cocatalytic activity tethered to a pendant ligand coordinated to the active metal center of the complex.
