The printed code associated with the article is illuminated with light having a first illumination characteristic and is readable in the default mode of the imaging reader. The electronic code displayed on the mobile communication device is readable in another mode of the reader having a different second illumination characteristic designed to minimize specular reflection from the screen of the device. When the presence of a device proximate to the reader is detected, the reader is configured to automatically switch from the default mode to the other mode so that the electronic code can be read.
