Disclosed is a method for detecting rapid eye movement (REM) sleep based on photoplethysmography (PPG). According to an embodiment of the present invention, the method for detecting REM sleep based on PPG comprises the following the steps: a REM sleep detection apparatus preprocesses a heart rate measured by using a PPG sensor; the REM sleep detection apparatus detects a plurality of valleys based on a variation of the preprocessed heart rate; and the REM sleep detection apparatus performs division into sections with respect to the plurality of valleys and determines a time zone having the heart rate, which is equal to a predetermined REM sleep detection threshold or greater than the heart rate of a previous valley, as REM sleep for each section.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2019
