There is provided a method of operating a portable electronic device to perform a mobile payment transaction at a store terminal. The electronic device can verify that the current user is indeed the authorized owner by requiring the current user of the device to enter the passcode. If the user is able to provide the correct passcode, the device is only partially prepared to perform the mobile settlement. In order for the user to fully activate the payment function, the user may have to provide a scheduled payment activation input, such as a two-button push, which notifies the device that the user is about to perform a financial transaction soon. The device may subsequently activate the billing applet for a predetermined period of time during which the user may maintain the device within the field of the store terminal to complete the near field communication based mobile payment transaction.
