A mixed reality-based cognitive training system and method for the elderly is disclosed. In the mixed reality-based cognitive training system which performs cognitive training using virtual reality contents according to an embodiment of the present invention, an HMD device worn by a cognitive trainee comprises: a VR content execution unit for executing a virtual reality content corresponding to a wearer; a display unit for displaying, through a display installed therein, an execution screen corresponding to the virtual reality content executed by the VR content execution unit; and a background distance adjusting unit for setting one of a plurality of background objects included in the execution screen as a background reference object and collectively changing the sizes of remaining portions of the background according to the adjusted size of the background reference object.
