MEMORY MANAGEMENT MODEL AND INTERFACE FOR UNMODIFIED APPLICATIONS

The memory management system described herein receives information from an application that describes how the memory is used and allows the application host to have more control over the application request to use the memory. The system provides an application memory management API that allows the application to specify more information about the memory allocation that will be useful in later management of the memory. The system also provides the ability to statically and / or dynamically analyze legacy applications to give some applications the ability to participate in more efficient memory management for non-modified applications to operate with the system. The system leverages the information provided by the application and provides application host changes to more efficiently manage memory using information and hooks into memory usage of the application. Thus, the system provides a new model for memory management that improves application host behavior and allows applications to use computing resources more efficiently.
