BACKUP AND RESTORE STRATEGIES FOR DATA DEDUPLICATION

Techniques for backing up and restoring optimized data streams are described. The chunk store includes each optimized data stream as a plurality of chunks comprising at least one data chunk and corresponding optimized stream metadata. The chunk storage includes data chunks in a deduplicated manner. The optimized data stream stored in the chunk storage is identified for backup. At least a portion of the chunk storage is stored in the backup storage device according to an optimized backup technique, a back-optimized backup technique, an item level backup technique, or a data chunk identifier backup technique. The optimized data stream stored in the backup storage device can be restored. And a callback module that generates a call to the restore application to request the file reconstructor from the backup storage device with optimized stream metadata and any referenced data chunks. The file reconstructor reconstructs the data stream from the referenced data chunks.
