A method and system for improving performance of a super playback receiver are disclosed. This method is particularly useful for low power applications. Initialize the quench ratio to an integer value greater than two based on at least one system parameter. The decision metric set from the first receiver operating characteristic is compared with a lower threshold value. The phase offset is estimated using an over quench method to align the quench signal with the quench ratio. The decision metric is compared with a higher threshold while minimizing false detection rates. The phase offset and the packet detection are verified using the over quench method. The payload is detected after checking for the presence of a start frame delimiter.
