In the context of the method for operating an access control system comprising server (3), at least one access control device (4) and at least one device (1) of the POS terminal, in relation to access rights for a zone covered by an access control system, an algorithm for generating and encrypting access rights is installed on at least one device (1) of a POS terminal, wherein said algorithm can be executed locally only if it is unlocked by means of a switch, wherein when the power is turned on or device (1) of the POS terminal is turned on, the key is transmitted to the POS terminal device (1) by server (3), wherein if the POS terminal device (1) is not connected to server (3), the algorithm installed on the POS terminal device (1) is executed using the key, wherein the access right is generated by the algorithm, is encrypted and tagged as a self-generated access right, which is encoded on the client medium using encoder (2) in device (1) of the POS terminal, wherein if access control is performed, while the POS terminal device (1) is not connected to server (3), independently generated access right is read out by access control device (4), at that, on the basis of tagging as independently formed access right it is identified as such and validity of access right is checked based on data coded by device (1) of the POS terminal.;EFFECT: method of operating an access control system.;1 cl, 1 dwg
