An apparatus for detecting a condition in a fluid system and initiating a response based on the condition will be described. The apparatus consists of a sensor responsive to first and second states of the fluid in the system and control means receiving the responses and generating command signals based on the responses received. In a liquid chromatography system, the apparatus is used to determine the volume of components of the fluid system. Moreover, the device enables the detection of leaks and the transport of the fluid in the system at an optimal speed. The device is well suited to be used with a light emitter and a light receiver which are sensitive to the fluid in a gaseous or liquid state.
