A laser light receiver (200, 300, 400) comprising: a housing; a first laser light photosensor (114) which generates a first signal when receiving a beam of laser light energy from an external laser light source, the light energy from the external laser light source defining a laser light plane (22); a visual indicator (216, 316) for indicating whether the laser light receiver (200, 300, 400) is substantially at the same level with respect to the laser light plane (22), characterized by a gravity reference device (246) generating a tilt angle signal indicative of the inclination angle signal A position processor (240, 340, 440) receiving the first signal and the pitch angle signal; a visible marker laser (52); a laser ranging device (50); using a second laser light source and a second laser light photosensor, wherein the laser rangefinder (50) is used to substantially determine a first distance (18) between the second laser photosensor and a predetermined external position as determined by a user of the laser light receiver (200 , 300, 400) while aiming at the visible marker laser (52); nsprozessor (240, 340, 440) receives the first distance (18) and is adapted, using the first signal, the inclination angle signal and the first distance (18), a vertical distance (L) between the predetermined external position and the laser light plane (22 ) as a relative survey; and wherein the housing, the first laser photosensor (114), the laser rangefinder (50), the gravity reference device (246), the visual display (216, 316), and the position processor (240, 340, 440) are assembled as a unitary handset.
