A method of producing hydrocarbons from and storing CO in an organic material rich rock formation, the method comprising the steps of: injecting the CO in an injection well in the organic rich rock formation and producing the hydrocarbons, wherein the hydrocarbons substantially include natural gas a production well when a drainage volume of the production well has an average reservoir pressure equal to or below a predetermined pressure, the injection well being in fluid communication with the production well; andclosing the production well and injecting the COin the injection well when the hydrocarbons produced include a CO mole fraction greater than or equal to a specified mole fraction.
