Apparatus for attaching a positioning means to a bone (1000) of a patient in a predetermined position relative to a hip implant (900), comprising: a trial hip implant (200) having a bearing surface (201) for bearing on the bone (1000) of the patient, the sample hip implant (200) having a portion (202) with a general shape of a spherical cap shell and a rim portion (203); and a template (100) attachable to the trial hip implant (200) and having at least one cylindrical opening (101, 102, 103, 104) with a longitudinal axis (105, 106, 107, 108), the template (100) a side facing the trial hip implant (200), when the template (100) is attached to the trial hip implant (200), a surface having a portion (113) having a complementary shape to the rim portion (203); wherein the trial hip implant (200) has a shape such that each straight line passing through one of the at least one cylindrical opening (101, 102, 103, 104) and towards the longitudinal axis (105, 106, 107, 108) of the respective opening (101 , 102, 103, 104) in parallel, the trial hip implant (200) does not cut when the template (100) is attached to the trial hip implant (200).
