An occupant restraint system for vehicles or aircraft is proposed,which is a gas generator with a throttle charger set located in a gas generator housing and an impact cushion connected to a gas generator housing outlet,as a so -called airbag, includes.The invention provides that the cushion has a first chamber and at least a second chamber, the first chamber being connected to the second chamber.The invention also refers to a cushion designed in this way and to a procedure for inflating such a cushion,by igniting the throttle charge set of the gas generator and transferring the resulting propellant gas through an exhaust opening of the gas generator housing into the impact cushion to expand it.According to the invention, the propellant gas is first transferred into a first chamber of the impact cushion, after which it is transferred from the first chamber into at least a second chamber of the impact cushion.
