A device is described which comprises a measuring unit for carrying out transmission alveolar ultrasonic measurements (TAU) in order to locate cavities in the jawbone, the measuring unit comprising an ultrasound transmitter and an ultrasound receiver. In some embodiments of the device, the geometric arrangement of the ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver is defined relative to one another. According to other embodiments, the device comprises, as a means to ensure a good acoustic conductivity, a gel or a flexible sheath or a balloon. The ultrasonic receiver may be configured such that the minimum distance from the edge of the receiver and a plurality of active piezoelectric elements is half of a single element of the plurality of elements.
