In the present case, a method is provided for determining an evaluation area in an image acquired by an image acquisition unit of a vehicle of a projection of a characteristic pattern having structures generated by segments of a headlight, the method calculating trajectories of at least two structures, each of the Trajectories, the translation of the associated structure in the image plane of the image acquisition unit describes depending on a distance between the vehicle and a projection surface of the characteristic pattern, calculating two positions to each structure on their trajectories at predetermined different distances between the vehicle and the screen, and set of the evaluation area in the image captured by the image acquisition unit, wherein the evaluation area is defined on the basis of the calculated positions.
