A method of identifying naive CD8 + T cells in a human-derived sample comprising analyzing a modification such as the methylation status of at least one CpG position in the human endosialin gene region (CD248), preferably the analyzed gene region according to SEQ ID No. 1 is positioned, with a missing modification, such as demethylation or lack of methylation of the gene region is indicative of a naive CD8 + T cell compared to a non-naive CD8 + T cell.
