The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for on-site production of a sterilizing gas and sterilization of articles. In a first step of the process, an alcohol is catalytically converted to an alkene oxide. Subsequently, the alkene oxide is mixed with a water vapor and nitrogen-containing inert gas, whereby a sterilizing gas is produced. Finally, the articles are sterilized with the sterilization gas. Throughout the process only at least one alcohol and one oxygen- and nitrogen-containing gas are used as starting materials. In addition, the present invention also relates to a device in which the method can be carried out.
