The invention relates to a device (22) for controlling a required contact force of a current collector (12) of a vehicle (10) to a catenary (20) and a method using such a device (22) and a traction unit (10) with at least one such apparatus (22), the apparatus (22) having a pilot circuit (32), a working pressure control circuit (60) and an adjustment device (50) including a relay valve (40). The pilot circuit (32) adjusts a pilot pressure, and the relay valve (40) uses a pilot pressure to control a power pressure to provide a required working pressure for the contact force of the pantograph.
