The invention relates to a method for operating a vehicle-to-X communication system of a vehicle, wherein a sleep mode is adopted, in which the vehicle-to-X communication is reduced, and can be partially resumed in response to the receipt of an activation message. The invention further relates to an associated method in which an activation message is sent. Moreover, the invention relates to a vehicle-to-X communication system for carrying out a method according to the invention.
