A method (100) and system (30) for generating digital road condition information is proposed. A sensor unit (34) provides data (28) from various sensors (36) of a vehicle (10). In a vehicle movement, the event is classified (120) by comparing the sensor data (28) with stored sensor data profiles. An event record (50) is generated containing at least one road condition class, position data, and a timestamp. A central computer (40) receives and stores a plurality of event records (50) in a central database (42) and generates therefrom a road condition record (52).
