According to some embodiments, there is provided a process for the production of SOP from a sulfate-containing mineral and carnallite or sylvenite, comprising: dissolving carnallite in water to obtain sylvenite and a high magnesium chloride brine; Adding sodium sulfate to the carnallite to produce a mixture of a kainite / Leonite, KCl and NaCl precipitant and a brine containing MgCl2, KCl, NaCl; Separating the NaCl from the mixture; Obtaining a precipitant mixture of Leonite and KCl; Filtering the leonite and washing with water to give a pure mixture of Leonite and KCl; Adding KCl to the Leonite with the KCl; and decomposing the Leonite with the KCl to SOP.
